Wrap Up: Athena Scholarship Fundraiser at the IMPROV

Our Athena Scholarship fundraiser this past February, was a success!

Thanks go out to the 68 people who attended the event and donated money to our Athena Scholarship fund.  We raised $1365 at this event, which has allowed us to fully fund our scholarships with your donations this year.  The Athena Scholarship is a merit based scholarship that SBAP established for the benefit of members of NPC sororities at San Jose State and Santa Clara Universities.  Each year we grant a scholarship to one young woman from each school.  The amount of the scholarship varies, depending on the amount of funds we are able to raise in a given year, but will always be a minimum of $500 per scholarship.

More information on how to apply for the SBAP Athena Scholarship, can be found here on our blog.

Save the Date! International Badge Day 2013

International Badge Day will be on Monday, March 4, 2013.

International Badge Day was established in 1997 by National Panhellenic Conference to set aside a day for women throughout the world to wear their sorority badges or Greek letters in a celebration of sisterhood.

This year's theme is: "Wear Your Letters on Your Heart".  Thanks to Abby Cowart of Spring Hill College for designing the logo and coming up with the theme.

Join us in celebrating by wearing your badge and inviting all sorority women you know to do the same!

Will you be wearing your badge?  Join the event on Facebook!

2012 - 2013 Kick Off

We had our first official meeting of the year last night, and I think this is going to be a great year for SBAP.  We now have delegates from 18 of the 26 NPC member groups; there are many new faces, many long time friends,  and everyone seems to be really eager to participate and promote Panhellenic.

We have an exciting slate of officers this year.  We're really lucky to have such enthusiastic women driving the group:

President: Shirley Hildreth, Alpha Sigma Alpha
Vice President: Jacqueline Vo, Pi Beta Phi
Treasurer: Diandra Weldon, Kappa Alpha Theta
Secretary: Reece Juelch, Kappa Kappa Gamma

We will be hosting our three big events this year, and we would love to see you at any or all of them:

  • October 25, 2012  -- Beyond the Badge;  A social and networking event at Joseph George Fine Wines in Willow Glen.    This is a no cost event which is open to all area Alumnae of NPC sororities.   Are you looking for business contacts, interior designers, travel agents, exercise partners, fellow quilters, a new realtor, etc?  Come meet women of all ages and interests at this casual networking event.  We will have loosely structured networking, and opportunities to socialize, drink a glass of wine, and of course a raffle in support of our Athena Scholarship.   The event at Joseph George will end at 8:00PM, but we can continue the conversations afterwards at the Three Flames, next door.
  • February 6, 2013 -- Athena Scholarship Fundraiser at the San Jose IMPROV, with comedian Sandi Selvi.  Our major fundraiser of the year.  100% of the proceeds from this event go to funding our Athena Scholarship.  The Athena Scholarship is granted to undergraduate women that are active, dues paying members of NPC sororities at Santa Clara and San Jose State Universities.
  • May 4, 2013 -- The 49th Annual Athena Luncheon.  Our signature event where we honor alumna who  exemplify Panhellenic ideals and principles.  The location of this years luncheon is still being determined.
We will continue to work on outreach to NPC member groups who are not yet represented in SBAP; if you are a member of an NPC group that is not listed among our membership, please contact us as we would love to have a delegate representing your fraternity in SBAP!

In the summer of 2012, SBAP was a recommendation writing machine.  We were contacted with requests for recommendations by many area high school seniors who were planning to go through recruitment at colleges and universities across the country.  Each year the number of requests has been steadily increasing, and in order to better handle future requests, this year we have put together a committee to come up with a plan and a program for promoting that will allow us to do that.  We are so thrilled to be able to help these young women begin their journey in Greek Life, and we have some exciting ideas in the works.   Look for updates throughout the year.

As you can see, we have a lot going on, and we are so fortunate to have so many eager and excited delegates to help us reach our goals.

Here's looking forward to a great year!

Thanks for supporting SBAP in 2012!

The Athena Luncheon on May 5th was a smashing success!  It was a beautiful day, and as always, the room we had at the California Cafe was amazing; we had the doors open and it was like being at a lovely garden party.

We oversold the room with more than 63 wonderful women in attendance.  We saw many old friends, made many new friends, and I think that everyone had a really enjoyable time.

We were so pleased to be able to honor Kay, Ruth and Kathy.  Each of these women do so much to forward the NPC ideals in the community and are so dedicated to their fraternity, it was truly our honor to be able to recognize their commitments.

We granted a $750.00 scholarship to Alyssa Johnston, a Delta Gamma from SCU.  Alyssa is truly dedicated and deserving; she is involved in school, the community and DG, and we were so glad to have been able to help her pay dues and buy books next fall.

We had some great baskets, and we sold a ton of raffle tickets.  I'll have the final sales total after our next meeting.

It has been my pleasure to be President of South Bay Alumnae Panhellenic this year.  We have such outstanding women representing each of their sororities, and I am lucky to have been able to work with each of them.  So, thank you for all your support of SBAP this year!  You help our group to stay strong and vibrant, and allow us to be able increase awareness of the Greek System throughout the community, to grant scholarships, and recognize outstanding alumnae.
